anyway, i decided that for each day of the chinese new year, i'll try to post a little interesting fact about the chinese new year. mostly to educate my white friends but also to help my asian friends remember some of these things we grew up with and sometimes didn't even know the meaning of it.
CNY facts #1: The first day of the Chinese New Year is a time to honor one's elders. Families visit the most senior members of their extended families, usually their parents or grandparents, starting with the male's side.
People wear red or bright colors because in the past it was believed that red could scare away evil spirits and bad fortune. New clothes are worn from head to toe to symbolize a new beginning in the new year/having more than enough things to use and wear in the new year. And while we are on the topic of red, red packets are passed out from married couples/elderly to unmarried juniors and kids. They contain money and the amount put in has to be an even number. 8 is considered a lucky number and 6 is also a lucky number because in chinese, it sounds like 'smooth' (流), thus representing a smooth year.
Specific to the first day, brooms and dust pans are put away so that the newly arrived good luck cannot be swept away. (I didn't do a CNY eve post but chinese families do major spring cleaning before the chinese new year in order sweep away the bad luck of the preceding year and make their homes ready for good luck in the new year.)
