on 元宵节, people also eat tang yuan (汤圆) and have a closing family reunion dinner. another popular thing to do is guess lantern riddles, which most often contain messages of good fortune, family reunion, prosperity and love.
in some countries, 元宵节 is also considered the Chinese version of Valentine's Day. single women would write their contact number on mandarin oranges and throw it in a river or a lake while single men would collect them and eat the oranges. the taste of the orange is an indication of their possible love: sweet represents a good fate while sour represents a bad fate.
i can't believe the 15 days of the chinese new year passed just like that. well, to end off the festivities, we went to kiwanis park to light our sky lanterns! it was so cold but the lanterns were so pretty!
rissa's one was intense! super long list!
the cousins who kept copying each other hahaha
"should we be looking at the camera or what do you want us to do?"
so grateful for this girl who came all the way down from taylorsville
my lantern haha
huge huge hearts
monika, michael and kersti were super fast when it came to writing their wishes and so they lit their lanterns first.
and so it began
pose for a nice picture
hold it and wait for it to expand. you can do so standing or squatting hahaha
and then let it go!
and in the meantime, these 4 were still busy writing their wishes haha
"ready, 1,2,3, GO!"
cheryl is great at multi-tasking haha
getting ready to set our lanterns free
only rissa's, cheryl's and mine flew
but then keith got his to fly!
his lonely lantern
so there you go, the fifteen days of chinese new year :)
